I’m back and I can’t believe it’s already December! The year is wrapping up real quick and is a time when every weekend is filled with Holiday festivities! Brunch is my favorite and I always love to have friends over to celebrate the season. This year, I’m definitely whipping up these super easy and delicious sausage gravy and biscuits! It’s stick to your bones good and comes together in less than 30 minutes! Everyone is always impressed with how good they are and can’t believe that it was that easy to make.
The biscuits here are fluffy tender and use pretty much everything you already have available. Milk, butter, flour, and a few other baking essentials. They’re the most excellent base for our sausage and gravy!
Now I can’t take too much credit for the sausage and gravy because Farmer John did all the hard work for me. Here, I used the Farmer John mild breakfast sausage roll and it’s seasoned to perfection! It has all of the savory notes that really make this dish. All I had to do was cook up the sausage, add flour and milk to make the gravy. Literally the flavor was already done in the sausage for me. Such a life and time saver. The cool thing is, I recently found out that Farmer John is based in LA and is a West Coast Original since 1931. When my friend brought some Farmer John bacon over to make for brussels sprouts for dinner, he said yea - their hot dogs are really good at the Dodgers Stadium too! They make everything from lunch meats, hot dogs, sausages, bacon, all of your favorite deli things.
Here is the recipe:
For Biscuits:
2 cups flour
1 tablespoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
2 teaspoons sugar
1 teaspoon kosher salt
1/2 cup cold butter
1 cup buttermilk
In a large bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, baking soda, sugar, and kosher salt together.
Grate butter into small pieces, then mix into the flour and evenly crumble into small pieces.
Next, add buttermilk - or just whole milk with 1 tbsp of vinegar. Mix into flour mixture until it just comes together. Now comes the fun part. Dust the working surface with flour and knead the dough until it starts to come together.
With the rolling pin, roll it out into an even layer and then fold it into 3 layers. Now we’ll cut the dough into circles with a biscuit cutter - if you don’t have a cutter, just use the top of your water glass. All works.
Line it on a baking sheet, brush the tops with more buttermilk and bake for about 12 minutes until it’s puffy and golden brown.
For Sausage & Gravy:
1 lb Farmer John Mild Pork Sausage Roll
3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
2 cups whole milk
salt and pepper to taste
First, brown Farmer John sausage over medium-high heat until no pink remains. Using the fat from the sausage, add the flour and mix it up. Slowly add milk, a little bit at a time, stirring after each addition. Bring to a boil, reduce heat, and simmer until thick and bubbly. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
Happy Holidays and let me know what you like to whip up for lunch!
