For a long time, I kept hearing my sister contemplate on whether or not she should buy a smoker. My sister has a family of 6 - 4 kids ranging from 9 years old to 2 years old. Jason, my brother in law was so excited about making this thing - he had the turkey thawing on the counter the night before so that it would be ready to put in by 9:00am. Yes, he had a schedule for smoking this Turkey! My sister simply added their favorite BBQ rub from the famous “Salt Lick” in Austin, and into the Electric Smoker it went. I don’t know what kind of smoker they had intended on purchasing before, but they loved the ease and usability of this smoker. All they had to do was preheat the smoker to 275 degrees, and fill the wood chip tank on the side every so often. My sister is always somewhat glued to her phone, so she really loved the virtual remote control function through the Masterbuilt App on her phone. She could see the internal temperature of the bird and also check the countdown timer - without having to step foot outside! She was busy making all the side dishes, so this was super convenient.
The Turkey was 20 pounds and took about 5 hours to cook - and I have to be truly honest with you here - it was the best turkey I’ve ever had. I also have to be honest and tell you that i went to 2 thanksgiving dinner that night, and the other turkey was fried. And while that was delicious too, I have to say - for everyone who constantly raves about fried turkey, I think you should try smoked turkey next year. That extra smokey flavor and the juiciness of the meat was incredible! My sister even packed me some extra for the road as we left for LA the next day. Man, I am craving it right now as we speak!
Tis the Season for gifting! I love sharing good food and good tools with friends and family, and glad that I could give my sister and her family this amazing gift (that keeps on giving ;P). Did I also mention that they smoked 3 racks of ribs that day too? They are already planning to make the next batch of brisket in the smoker, and I’m hoping they wait til I’m back home so I can have some too!
